1. VSCA Canteen of the Year Awards

Congratulations, winners!

The Winners and Highly Commended in the 2009 VSCA Canteen of the Year Awards were announced on 30 November at the VSCA Annual Canteen Rewards Evening at Box Hill RSL.

Click here to see a full list of the Winners and Highly Commended.

The Victorian School Canteen Association (VSCA) is pleased to recognise and acknowledge the wonderful work being done in Victorian school canteens. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Full details of nominations (with photos and lots of great ideas you could use in your own school canteen) will be published in the "Activities & Resources" pages on VSCA's website: www.vsca.org.au

All the information and ideas submitted for the Awards (including price lists, recipes, hints etc) is now available (in primary or secondary/P-12 editions) to purchase as a valuable resource from VSCA: $16.50 incl GST and postage per edition.

Inaugural VSCA Glenda Smith Memorial Award Winner

The inaugural winner in 2009 of the VSCA Glenda Smith Memorial Award is Deb Belsar, Canteen Manager, Strathfieldsaye Primary School.

This award celebrates outstanding excellence in school canteen and community. It is in memory of Mrs Glenda Smith, a legendary canteen manager from Yarrawonga Primary School, who passed away on 5 October 2009 at the age of 57. Glenda was a multiple prize winner over several years of the VSCA Canteen of the Year awards. She went to extraordinary lengths to introduce and promote healthy eating in her school's canteen. Over many years of service as a mother of 6 children, school councillor, parents' club president, canteen volunteer, child care worker and canteen manager, Glenda certainly lived Yarrawonga Primary School's motto of "Strive and Achieve Together".

VSCA was very pleased to have Vicki and Sharon, representatives of Yarrawonga Primary School, as guests at our 30 November Rewards Evening for the announcement of this new annual Award in honour of their late friend and colleague.

2. 2009 VSCA Bushfire Appeal

Grants awarded to recipients

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the appeal that VSCA ran during 2009 to raise funds for bushfire affected school canteens in Victoria.

VSCA Canteen Services Pty Ltd sponsored all the administration and other costs involved in running the appeal. This meant that every single cent raised went to the beneficiaries.

A total of $2278.50 was raised. Generous donations were received from:

  • companies (Flexi Schools, Nichirei Australia)

  • school communities in New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia

  • the Western Australian School Canteen Association

  • private individuals (Kelly Neville and anonymous donors)

After consulting the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, and much thought and discussion, the VSCA Committee of Management decided to equally divide the funds raised between one primary and one secondary school:

  • Kinglake West Primary School, $1139.25
  • Whittlesea Secondary College, $1139.25

The Student Welfare Co-ordinator from Whittlesea Secondary College was present at VSCA's Annual Canteen Rewards Evening on 30 November to receive their donation. She spoke about the devastating impact of the fires on their school community - 19 students and staff from their school perished in the Black Saturday fires. She also talked about their recovery since which has been slow and difficult, and will be ongoing. Their school welfare team comprised of 4 youth workers, a nurse and a chaplain has made 2488 individual consultations with some 800 people this year. VSCA's donation may assist in the purchase of a new refrigerator for their canteen.

3. 2010 VSCA Committee of Management

At VSCA's Annual General Meeting held on 30 November, the voluntary Committee of Management was elected for the coming year. Thank you to Annie, Desie, Marg, Prue, Sharon, Silvia and Suzi for putting up their hands!

Would you like to be a VSCA Committee Member? We still have some vacancies on the Committee and we urge you to consider joining. We meet on the third Saturday afternoon of each month in Box Hill.

The pay is lousy - you do not get paid anything at all for your service!

But the benefits are invaluable - you will gain much in friendship, laughter, support, information, and a broader view of the canteen world outside your own school. You will experience the special sense of achievement and the warm fuzzy feeling that comes from working with like-minded people on the shared goals of advocating for and assisting school canteen people around Victoria.

There are opportunities to participate in special projects, to grow personally and to develop skills. You can have a voice and you certainly will be heard! There is always room for each committee member to express themselves and to use their own special skills to work for the good of the Association.

Are you not able to attend meetings or too busy to serve as a VSCA Committee Member? Perhaps you'd like to be a VSCA Supporter? Would you like to help out on a one-off basis when VSCA is organising an event or an activity? It may be a workshop in your area, or VSCA's annual School Canteen Expo. We always need extra help at different times and it would be great to be able to call on you!

Please contact us if you feel able to help or participate in any way. We'd love to hear from you!
