"I am nominating my 'Canteen Crew' for Best Voluntary Helper.
"The original concept of student volunteers started
three and a half years ago when I became the Canteen Manager
at Euroa Secondary College.
"To get the ball rolling, I put the idea out there through
word of mouth and the school's Daily Bulletin.
"School captains or students that held a responsible
position were targeted to help. All students were put through
basic food safety and handling sessions, to inform them of
the fundamental criteria of hand washing, use of gloves and
tongs, etc.
"The students who volunteered received morning tea or
lunch depending on what shifts they worked. The shifts were
broken up into recess, $2.50 value; Lunch 1 (12:45 - 1:15
pm), $4.50 value and Lunch 2 (1:15 - 1:45 pm), $2.50 value.
"Since then the 'crew' have merged into a cooperative
group that manages themselves and their time accordingly.
"I think this has worked well as the canteen is not
tokenistic in its approach and all students are welcome and
feel they have some ownership of it.
"Most of the work is based around serving, but duties
also include stocking and register. Some also help with food
preparation and in house catering.
"They are a great bunch of kids, and I only hope the
concept continues."
- Dianne Mackrell, Canteen Manager (letter)
"The 'Canteen Crew' are a great group of students who volunteer
their free time during recess and lunch to help run the canteen.
Duties include serving, till operation, cleaning and restocking
as well as helping with any in-school catering.
"'The Crew' are from all year levels gaining valuable
experience and skills, some going on to gain employment, or
further their hospitality studies.
"These girls are an indispensable part of the canteen,
they are reliable and trustworthy and always fun, working
in well with any parent volunteers. They are always making
a good impression and being a positive attribute to the school
community.
"Volunteers come in many shapes and sizes, and are the
life force of the community. They should all be recognised
and applauded. With the ever increasing difficulty of sourcing
volunteers, 'The Crew' have filled a real need in the canteen.
"The 'Canteen Crew' are:
Emily Pettie - Year 12
Ashleigh Symons - Year 11
Dakota Gorsuch - Year 11
Katie Wilkshire - Year 11
Vicki Gommers - Year 11
Alana Murphy-Preston - Year 10
Deanna Murphy-Preston - Year 10
Jamie-Lee Preston - Year 8
"I am proud of my crew and feel they deserve the recognition
this award would give."
- Dianne Mackrell, Canteen Manager (citation)
"I can vouch for the content in the accompanying document.
The students have ownership of the operation of the canteen."
- Michael Bell, Principal
