"Dromana Primary School proudly nominates Angie Robertson
for the 2009 VSCA Canteen of the Year Awards. As Canteen Manager
for the past three years, Angie has played a leading role
in providing nutritious, wholesome and tasty food to staff
and students, while also promoting healthy eating as a key
part of a healthy and active lifestyle.
"In consultation with food nutrition experts, Angie
has worked tirelessly to overhaul the old canteen menu with
healthier options. She has used her initiative and imagination
and spent countless hours (both at home and at school), trialling
and testing new foods and recipes. Her hard work and dedication
have been significant in developing an attractive looking
menu that has made healthy changes look new and exciting.
"Previously pies, chips, icy-poles and doughnuts were
a daily feature on most children's plates. Now children are
offered a wide choice, from pasta and sandwich wraps to garlic
fingers, freshly baked muffins and yoghurts to name but a
few. Angie has been instrumental in bringing about these changes
with a focus on low fat/salt and less sugar and artificial
flavourings.
"Angie has developed both easy to follow Summer and
Winter menus. She has placed smiley symbols on these menus
for students to use as a guide for selecting healthier menu
items and to encourage healthy eating. She has used catchy
names for different food items like Chicken Zoomers, Tummy
Teasers and Hot Pockets. She communicates regular specials
and promotions, messages to parents, or even interesting nutrition
facts. Angie has also organised a student competition which
resulted in renaming our canteen to 'Munch and Crunch' as
a way of promoting our new and healthy canteen food.
"Angie's culinary skills extend to her catering for
staff and parent functions. Her delicious Lasagnes, Quiches,
Caesar Salads and Trifles are talked about and greatly appreciated
by all members of our Dromana school community. She uses fresh
produce from our school vegetable garden and takes great pride
in the presentation of her meals. She has even organised thank
you afternoons in her own time for canteen helpers in appreciation
of their support.
"Angie is dedicated to her job and often works beyond
the call of duty. She is friendly and approachable and always
delivers our invaluable school food service with a smile.
She has played a positive role by providing the means by which
children can put into practice the nutrition messages they
are being taught in the classroom and by promoting a school
culture of healthy eating that can extend into the wider family
and community. Plenty of food for thought!
"Please accept our nomination, as Angie Robertson truly
deserves this special recognition for her hard work and great
achievements of food services to our school."
