"Kate is an outstanding manager who has helped many other
schools with support.
In 2002, the school began operating the Canteen and appointed
Kate Haussegger as Canteen Manager.
University High School is a large inner suburban high school
with 1200 students, from different cultural backgrounds. Kate
caters for all students with a wide variety of home made foods
eg curries, pasta, soups, salads, rolls, wraps, sandwiches,
muffins.
The Canteen is a clean, bright & friendly environment. Food
Handling is of a high standard and all regulations are adhered
to.
Kate and her staff provide catering for the Gene Technology
Access Centre for morning teas/lunches for students from other
schools, VCE functions - Health Days, Valedictory Evening,
Parent/Teacher evenings, staff morning teas, guest morning
teas, Curriculum Day lunches, school council dinners, staff
meetings. These vary in size from 10 to 120 people for lunch.
It has got to the stage that our staff will not have any
other caterers for Curriculum Day lunches other than Kate.
Kate is always helpful, enthusiastic, supportive, willing,
innovative, creative and organized. Kate has 4 part time canteen
assistants who are all friendly, hardworking and positive
staff members. Through Kate's leadership, they are a great
team.
Many other schools have come to visit and talk to Kate about
how the Canteen operates. She shares her recipes and ideas
to all who ask.
The canteen is financially successful, however the main objective
of the school canteen is healthy, home made, reasonably priced
food for students, staff and visitors.
The school would like to show their appreciation of Kate
by nominating her for the Canteen Manager of the Year Award."
- Rob Newton, Principal
"Kate Haussegger, the Canteen Manager at University High
School, has a number of fantastic qualities. Over the years,
Kate has supported the VCE office and staff with catering
for many functions including
- Year 11 Health Day providing healthy morning teas
- Year 12 Valedictory Evening providing supper for 450 -
500 people
- Parent/Teacher Evenings providing dinner to the staff
eg home made soups, bread rolls, fruit platters
Kate is a tireless hard worker who goes out of her way to
be supportive and helpful to staff and students. Kate is always
introducing new, healthy, home made foods to the canteen and
the Canteen's success is due to her hard work, positive attitude
and willingness to assist staff and students.
Nothing is too much trouble for Kate. She cheerfully, efficiently
and with a high level of innovation provides healthy, nutritious
alternatives for staff and students.
The suppers she has provided for our annual Valedictory Evening
have been of the highest quality with a large range of alternatives,
presented tastefully and organised brilliantly."
- Kevin Campbell, VCE Co-ordinator
"…I have known Kate in her capacity as Canteen Manager for
10 years. Kate has maintained an exceptional level of consistent
service and has successfully set about to provide a balanced
approach to the nutritional needs of students and staff. In
addition to catering for 1200 students at recess and lunchtimes,
Kate frequently caters for various school staff functions
including morning teas, buffet lunches and special events…
The Gene Technology Access Centre (GTAC) is a specialist
science education facility that offers programs, in molecular
and cell biology, to students and teachers across all educational
sectors. The Centre attracts over 6000 secondary students
and in excess of 600 teachers each year from across Victoria…GTAC
has further added to Kate's workload since the Centre was
established on the campus in 2004. Many of our school groups
have travelled for more than three hours by public transport,
often leaving home before 6.00 am. They are delighted that
Kate opens the canteen for them on arrival and frequently
express their appreciation at the welcome they receive and
of the range of items they can purchase.
Kate willingly provides, often at short notice, morning teas
and lunches for teachers attending professional learning programs
conducted by the Centre. There has never been any criticism
of her service or the food items provided.
Kate leads a team of several canteen helpers. The stability
of her team, over many years, says much about her management
and people skills. Kate runs a highly efficient kitchen and
deals effectively with a diverse and demanding school population,
exercising a warm sense of humour and professionalism that
many similar businesses would do well to emulate. Kate takes
a pride in the food she prepares from scratch. Items frequently
requested by GTAC include freshly baked muffins, healthy sandwiches
and salads, soups, and a range of hot dishes. Kate gives due
attention to the multicultural nature of the school population
and to the special dietary needs of individuals.
Kate's support for GTAC and her willingness to meet our requests
has earned her the respect of all my staff and provides an
important hospitality element to our programs. She works closely
with my Administrative Assistant to ensure she knows the number
of visiting students, their time of arrival and from where
they have come.
Successful schools are more than just students and teachers.
Support staff do much to maintain the school fabric and it
is most appropriate that their efforts are recognised more
widely. There can be few canteen managers who can claim that
they have catered for the needs of students and staff from
over 75% of Victorian secondary schools.
I recommend her most highly…"
- Brian Stevenson, GTAC Director
