"Lancefield Primary School is a medium size school in the
town of Lancefield in central Victoria. We have 135 students.
Our canteen runs on a purely voluntary basis and is staffed
by parent helpers. It offers a lunch order service and snacks
and drinks at recess on Wednesday and Friday each week.
Our canteen manager is a school parent called Sally Potts.
She has only taken over running the canteen this year. In
this time she has completed the required Food Safety certificate,
met with the Macedon Ranges Shire food safety inspector to
discuss correct food handling procedure, implemented and improved
the school's healthy food policy and run a friendly and successful
canteen service.
Sally is in the school 3 or 4 days a week: preparing food,
cleaning, ordering and running the canteen. As you can see
from the Term 3 canteen menu … the canteen provides a highly
nutritious service. The soups and many of the meals are home
made and are very popular with the students and parents. The
menu varies from term to term and season to season.
Sally also maintains a rigorous financial control of the
canteen, including recording all food thrown out or past its
use by date and a stocktake of stored items once a term. So
far this year, the canteen has run at a small profit which
shows that prices are reasonable and costs are well under
control.
Through Sally, the canteen has provided the school with special
lunches and menus for special occasions such as 'Footy Day'
and a huge 'Yum Cha' day when all of the students were provided
with a free Chinese meal.
Sally attends school working bees on the weekend and through
the canteen provides snacks, drinks and a light lunch to the
volunteer workers. She has also put into practice a range
of food hygiene practices and protocol to put our canteen
at the highest standard for cleanliness and food safety.
The teachers at our school cannot speak highly enough of
her dedication and hard work. The whole community is very
proud of our canteen service.
Poem
She's easy going,
She's always calm.
You ask for a hand,
And she'll give you an arm."
