"Lyn Spillane has been employed at Kennington Primary School
for 4 years. Kennington Primary School has a student population
of 634 and a staff population of 56. KPS is also the host
site for the Bendigo Deaf Facility. Several students and staff
members are deaf or hard of hearing. Auslan is the language
other than English taught and is a constant means of communication
with classrooms, the playground and any school event. The
canteen is open every day for twice-daily over the counter
sales and lunch orders.
Lyn is a valued member of our school community. Her contributions
to the KPS community exceed her duties as Canteen Manager.
As Canteen Manager, Lyn manages the following in an exemplary
manner and always with a smile on her face:
- Complying with relevant DEECD guidelines
- Changing the menu termly to meet local needs
- Distributing menus to families on a regular basis
- Writing relevant articles for the school newsletter and
website
- Ensuring that all menu items are healthy, interesting
and appealing
- Managing the budget and being accountable to School Council
- Managing volunteer labour on a daily basis - adults and
children o Liaising with service providers on a daily basis
- Managing the distribution of fruit on Free Fruit Tuesday
- Organising termly 'special menus' in line with school
theme days and fundraising days eg. Footy Day
- Co-ordinating the Food Court on School Fair Day (several
thousand visitors attend the school fair)
- Catering for school functions, including curriculum days
for staff, staff luncheons, evening events for staff, parents
and students and Prep Transition functions
- Supporting teaching staff and Out of Hours Care staff
with food handling regulation application, and advice when
handling food with/for students
- Supporting colleagues in neighbouring schools by offering
advice and allowing them to observe best practice in the
KPS canteen, and
- Chairing the termly canteen committee meetings. The members
of the committee include teachers, School Council members
and parents.
Lyn is a very talented individual. Her 'can do' attitude
and willingness to embrace all aspects of school life make
her and the school canteen assets to Kennington Primary School."

"Lyn makes lots of yummy, healthy food for us to eat. She
makes us frozen fruit juices, pizzas, homemade soups, muffins,
popcorn and hot chocolates. YUM!"
"One of our favourite foods is the Slinky Apple. Lyn puts
the apple in a machine an she turns the handle around. The
machine removes the skin and the core and turns the apple
into a slinky! This makes a healthy snack. Every time we go
to the canteen Lyn is very friendly and caring. She always
has a big smile. We love Lyn!"
