"Lysterfield Primary School is proud to nominate Carolyn
Muller as a candidate for the 2007 VSCA Canteen of the Year
Awards.
Carolyn is a highly valued member of the Lysterfield Primary
School community. Carolyn commenced her work in our school
canteen as a parent helper & became our 'paid' Canteen Manager
in 1997 when our school relocated from its original site in
Wellington Road to its new home in Bellfield Drive, Lysterfield.
At this time there were 540 students in attendance and enrolments
increased over the next few years to 650, current enrolment
stands at 498. Our canteen currently operates 3 days/week,
Monday, Wednesday & Friday.
Carolyn manages an excellent canteen which has impressed
the local Health Inspector on each occasion.
In the last 12 months our canteen has been able to work successfully
considering a number of dramatic changes. Along with the need
to train a new staff member following the retirement of a
long-time serving assistant, Carolyn has also undertaken an
extensive exercise in surveying, evaluating & changing the
canteen menu to bring it in line with Department guidelines
on 'healthy eating in schools'. This involved creating and
organising student 'taste-testing' of a number of food items,
eg. honey/soy chicken drummettes, vegetable frittata, baked
potatoes, fresh fruit bowls, salad bowls & educating the children
on red, amber & green food categories for food that is healthy
to eat.
Throughout this changeover, Carolyn has been required to
liaise closely with food suppliers - attending demonstration
& information sessions, consult with the school nurse re any
special dietary needs for students, School Council and the
school community. Her friendly disposition enables her to
work successfully with all those she deals with in the community.
As part of promoting a new healthy life-style, Carolyn organised
a display of photographs in the canteen foyer as a way of
enticing children to look and want to try.
Carolyn is also assisting the school in its purchase of a
broad range of quality fruit and vegetables as part of our
school's involvement in the 'Free Fruit Friday' initiative.
Carolyn also contributes to the whole school's well-being
through her catering for our special events and curriculum
days providing staff with healthy and appetising options.
Many of these functions are outside of Carolyn's normal working
hours.
I have no hesitation in nominating Carolyn for any of the
relevant awards."
