"Annie is one person who has proven there is more to being
an outstanding canteen manager than just ordering food and
serving it to students and staff.
"Annie is a superb manager of people and directs much
of her attention to the welfare of our students, her parent
volunteers and staff. Annie makes the canteen at Diamond Valley
College a happy and friendly place to be, constantly full
of chatter and laughter. Her warm nature is evident by the
number of parents who volunteer, not just once a term, but
sometimes two or three times a term, and even continuing on
after their children have graduated from Year 12. In a college
where many parents work, Annie has maintained a loyal band
of forty volunteers willing to support the canteen. Annie
is concerned that they feel part of a team and is constantly
looking for ways to recognise and reward their contribution
with afternoon teas, group outings, etc.
"Annie is constantly introducing new and varied, healthy
options to her canteen menu and strives to encourage students
to learn that 'healthy' doesn't have to be boring. In October
she undertook the enormous task of organising a whole school
Healthy Foods Day where she gave every student and staff member
the opportunity to sample a variety of healthy foods in a
fun festive atmosphere. She had everything from sushi to fruit
salad & yoghurt to bottles of water. The whole lunch time
event was highly successful and received much positive feedback.
Annie continues to offer a large variety of healthy foods
in her regular menu. Annie's promotion of health and nutrition
has been achieved together with a canteen committee and input
from students who feel their proposals are valued. Annie is
never afraid to trial an idea and involve the customers.
"Annie is always willing to train students to work in
the canteen during their breaks, which in turn has led to
some of them obtaining their Food Handling Certificates and
pursuing careers in similar industries. She is very popular
with the students and takes particular interest and note of
any who she feels may have special needs or the attention
of the Student Welfare Co-ordinator.
"Annie caters for our monthly sub-committee meetings,
providing a nutritious two course meal for up to fifteen college
council members. Since Annie has begun catering for these
meetings, the attendance and collegial atmosphere have been
excellent and a testimony to her culinary skill.
"Our college would be a lesser place without the daily
contributions which Annie Brownrigg makes to its life."
